Solar EV charging options

Home: rooftop solar + AC charger

Pair a home AC charger with rooftop panels for villas, apartments and gated communities, with load safety built in.

Carports & canopies

Solar carports over parking bays shade vehicles, generate daytime power and offset charging costs — including heavy-vehicle bays at fleet depots.

Industrial: solar + BESS

Captive EV charging with solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems for hospitals, IT offices, malls and factories that cannot afford downtime.

Rough solar sizing

Planning assumption: about 4 kWh per kWp per day. Your site survey sets the real figure.

Daily charging energyExampleSolar needed (approx.)
20 kWhHome: about one 40 kWh car topped up 50%5 kWp
100 kWhOffice or hotel: 4–5 cars a day25 kWp
500 kWhBusy highway or fleet hub125 kWp (plus grid / BESS)

Why solar suits Tamil Nadu charging sites

  • Strong sunshine for most of the year in Tamil Nadu.
  • EV charging tariffs are time-of-day based and cheapest in solar hours — solar plus daytime charging lowers energy cost further.
  • A BESS stores midday solar for evening peak hours, when grid tariffs are highest.
  • Net metering, where your category allows it, turns surplus solar into grid credits.

Frequently asked questions

Can an EV charging station run on solar power?

Yes. Solar panels on the roof, a carport canopy or the ground supply daytime power to the chargers; the grid (and optionally a battery storage system) covers nights and cloudy days. Relux designs and installs solar arrays, carports and BESS alongside AC and DC chargers.

How much solar do I need for EV charging?

Divide your daily charging energy by the solar yield. Assuming about 4 kWh per kWp per day, 100 kWh of daily charging needs roughly 25 kWp of panels. Real output varies with location, tilt, shading and season.

Is solar worth it for a fast-charging station in Tamil Nadu?

Solar lowers the energy part of the cost during the day. Tamil Nadu's EV charging tariff is already cheapest in solar hours (about ₹6.50/kWh, 9 AM–4 PM), so pairing solar with daytime charging and a BESS for evening peaks works best for high-use sites.

Does PM Surya Ghar subsidy cover EV charging stations?

No. PM Surya Ghar is for residential consumers (and housing societies for common facilities), with subsidy up to 3 kW. Commercial charging stations and businesses are not covered.

Can I export excess solar power to the grid?

Grid-connected solar in Tamil Nadu is governed by TNERC's solar regulations; net metering lets you export surplus solar for credits where your consumer category allows it. Relux integrates net metering in its solar EV charging designs.
