How it works

How is EV charging time calculated?

Charging time ≈ energy needed (kWh) ÷ charging power (kW). Energy needed is battery size × the percentage you add. The power is the lower of what the charger can give and what the car can accept, and it drops above about 80% as the battery tapers.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

kWh is energy — how much the battery holds or how much you add. kW is power — how fast energy flows. A 60 kW charger adding 30 kWh takes roughly half an hour at full speed.

Why does my car charge slower than the charger's rating?

Every car has a maximum DC power it accepts, and charging slows as the battery fills or when it is very hot or cold. A 240 kW charger cannot push more than the car's own limit.

Why charge only to 80% on a fast charger?

Above about 80% the car reduces power to protect the battery, so the last 20% can take as long as the first 60%. On trips it is usually faster to stop twice to 80% than once to 100%.
